EU, AU urged to mediate in Chad-Sudan crisis

Afrique en ligne (7/18/09)
Chad - The Monitoring Committee for Peace and Reconciliation in Chad has recommended that the European Union and African Union should carry out high level mediation talks on the crisis between Chad and Sudan, according to a memorandum made public in the Chadian capital, N'Djamena, on Friday.

The memorandum agreed after a meeting in N'Djamena said the mediators would work not only for the establishment of a ceasefire, but also for disarmament in a bid to bring the stakeholders to dialogue as specified in the agreement signed 13 A u gust, 2007 between the two parties.

The committee also recommended a regional conference on peace which will bring together all the stakeholders involved in Chad, Sudan and the Central African Re public, to be held before the end of 2009 to avoid disturbing the electoral agenda in Chad.

The committee urged the Chadian population to mobilize to press the political stakeholders to give priority to a sincere and constructive dialogue aimed at settling national problems.

It urged political parties to continue "playing their key role" for peace in Chad and asked the intelligentsia to use their ingenuity and take up initiatives to put Chad on the road to lasting peace.
