Chadian President Supports Refilling of Lake Chad

Afrique en ligne (7/7/09)
Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno has urged countries of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LTBC), the Niger Basin Authority (NBA), the permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS) and development partners to speed up the process of draining the Oubangui-Chari and the Congo waters into Lake Chad.

In a statement issued in the Chadian capital, N'Djamena, on Tuesday, President Deby Itno said: "We must join our forces to pave the way for a better environmental future for our country. We have to remain united against any climate change in order to protect our planet."

He also said the advance of the Sahara desert was responsible for the reduction of the size of the Lake, which had gone down from 25,000 square kilometres in the 1960s to less than 3,000 square kilometres at the moment.

The phenomenon also causes plant covers, rare species and streams to disappear.

To curb the advance of the desert, the Chadian government has already banned uncontrolled deforestation and use of charcoal while encouraging the use of improved ovens, butane gas and kerosene stoves.

This year the Chadian government intends to launch a 10 million-plant reforestation campaign while raising awareness on deforestation effects.
